The Living School

The Living School has grown out of discussions in about the need for a fundamentally different approach to education and the deep concern for our childrens' well being.

We have created a school in which children and adults together can experience the world as a whole. A school in which participants--children, parents, and teachers--create forms for exploring our relationship to life in all its variety.

This school uses many of the principles and methods of home schooling and the open or free classroom. The goal of the school is not to give children any particular body of knowledge. It is to develop their ability to interact with their world and to find and follow their passion. The education at the school is learner directed.

The Living School is based on a relationship of respect, and responsibility. It is a learning environment in which each child is free to pursue the creative and academic areas to which the individual child is naturally drawn. The school provides supportive location for this learning activity as well as a wide variety of mentors and experiential learning situations. As a model of democratic values, the school is run democratically. It is our view that children can become happy adults with the drive for learning, creativity and relationship that is so evident in a young child still intact. It is our assertion that the technical skills, the livelihood of a life best comes from the areas in which a person has inherent interest and that creativity and relationship skills are essential for a fulfilled life.

The Living School is incorporated as a nonprofit organization (501-c-3) so the corporation can receive tax deductible donations. We enroll throughout the year and are located in Boulder, Colorado. The current age range for students is 5-18 , the student/staff ratio is approximately 10:1.
